“You will never know how much it has cost my generation to preserve YOUR freedom. I hope you will make a good use of it.”John Adams
Foundation of America
Freedom, is an inherent right of all people. The freedom to speak freely, sovereignty to walk your own path, and the pursuit of the American dream. Freedom is embedded into the core of this nation. Freedom is one of the cornerstones of our constitution and democracy. The Declaration of Independence, Constitution, and Bill of Rights invoke the ideals of freedom, liberty, and justice for all. Ideals that were put into place over 240 years ago when we declared our independence from Britain. America was established to be a beacon of hope and freedom for the world. That is the foundation of America and her spirit.
We as Americans have always understood and fought for our freedoms. We all understand that our freedoms are not negotiable. Our freedoms are not up for debate. Nor should our freedoms be leveraged by any political agendas. We live in a pivotal and precarious time in the American landscape. Our freedoms are under attack and how we respond will chart our nation’s course into the future.
Our Freedoms Under Attack
Our Second Amendment rights have been vigorously under attack for over three decades now. Many are willing to restrict or deny a right under the guise of safety. Many seek to answer the dynamic and complex answer of violence with restriction of firearms. The restriction of firearms will not solve the answer to these mass attacks of terrorism and violence. Violence is a dynamic and complex phenomenon. The evaluation and evolution of violence is dynamic and complex with a myriad of reasons why people choose its extreme. So, the answers to the enigma of violence is also as such. Evil men will find a way to plan, coordinate, and execute evil things no matter what just men and women do on the right side of the law. If there is a means there will always be a way for these treacherous people to accomplish their goals. With guns or in absence of them. Violence will always find a way .
“Those that can give up essential liberty to gain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.”Benjamin Franklin
In the face of uncertainty and fear we should not give up a right for the guise of safety. Once we relinquish a right or restrict a freedom in anyway we threaten to lose that right forever. So, we should never surrender any of our rights or freedoms. We should defended and honor those freedoms.
Safeguarding All Rights and Freedoms
As, Americans we must all protect and defend all freedoms and rights granted to us by the Constitution. We as a nation cannot pick and choose the freedoms we want to espouse and adhere to. Every right or freedom is of equal worth and value to our overall freedoms. An attack on one freedom is an attack on all freedoms. If we are willing to restrict 2nd Amendment rights then you are willing to restrict 1st Amendment rights of Americans or any other right. Protectors of free speech, free press, and religion will say any restriction of those rights would be dangerous to our freedoms and our democracy. That a restriction of speech is a way to suppress the voice its people. The removal of the freedom of press would be removing the ability for the people to hold the government accountable for its actions or question its direction. Restricting the freedom of religion by placing state acceptable religions would be creating an authoritative government.
I will protect and defend the 1st Amendment with vigor and tenacity. I believe that all speech no matter how divisive, disgusting, and hateful that potentially language might be, still is protected speech. I may vehemently disagree on a fundamental level with divisive and hateful language. Yet, I will support that language. Not because I agree with its attitudes or content but, because as an American that person has a right to speak their truth. I have the ability to ignore that language and not consume it. I also have the ability to engage that speech and retort it. To engage that hateful mindset with a peaceful protest, to retort with a positive message, or potentially change someone’s point of view with a one-on-one interaction. What I should not do is restrict their freedom to speak their truth because I disagree with that truth.
Does not this same vigor of defense apply to the 2nd Amendment? Isn’t a restriction of any right dangerous and detrimental to our freedoms and our democracy? The answer to both of those questions is a resounding “Yes”. We must defend all the Constitution with passion and tenacity. We cannot…cannot…let our opinion guide the course of our freedoms and rights.
The Voices of Compromise
“The Price of freedom is eternal vigilance.”Thomas Jefferson
Voices from the opposing side will voice a need for compromise. To compromise our rights for the benefit of increased safety of the general public. That our staunch stance not to bend to the evolving climate that we are considered, “unreasonable” and not seeing the “bigger consequences” of our position. Yet, people on the opposing side don’t see the opposite perspective and the potential damage that can be done to our freedoms. If we compromise one right we are compromising the foundation of our constitution and our rights as a whole. As, nation we cannot choose which rights or freedoms to support. We must support all rights and freedoms granted to us by the constitution. We may land on different sides of this discussion but, we should never compromise the rights and freedoms of others.
Preserving Our Freedoms
“The Greatest Danger to American freedom is a government that ignores The Constitution.”Thomas Jefferson
We are a nation of rights and freedoms. As, a nation we must fight for and preserve the freedoms of every individual. If we compromise on any right or freedom we potential jeopardize this nation’s future and its liberties. At the end of the day we must remember the heavy sacrifice and toll paid to create and preserve our freedoms and this union. Even when this nation did not stand up to the ideals it espoused in its Constitution. As, a nation and people we fought and endured to have those ideals fully realized. To become a more perfect union. To have America stand upon her foundation. Instead of surrendering those freedoms we should fight to preserve them and honor them. Those values and ideals are the beauty and strength of America and her spirit.
